Like many other voluntary national standards, the JIS(Japanese Industrial Standards) have also their accompanying certification system to promote and popularize their use. The main scope of the certification scheme is to provide the market with a credible proof that a product that bears the certification mark does comply with the relevant standard(s). The specificity of the JIS mark scheme is that it is based on the manufacturing process control in authorized factories, rather than being based on inspection of the products concerned.
A manufacturer or a processor can request the competent Minister, or JIS Mark Certification Body, to be certified to affix the JIS mark to a product that is covered by a limited number of JIS and that is designated under this scheme by the competent Minister (so-called designated products or the JIS mark products).
Since JIS establish a certain quality level for the products to which they apply, the JIS mark is beneficial to both manufacturers and consumers as it is able to mark a distinction between products that possess a certain quality and which do not.
